Connect 2 Celebratory Event at Islington
23rd April will be the official unveiling of the Portrait Bench in Islington with Jazzy B and representatives for Edith Garrud and Florence Keen. We will be meeting at Finsbury Park Bus station at 3.30pm.
We will then meet children, parents and teachers from Gillespie Primary and Drayton Park Primary who will have paraded along the scheme to Gillespie Park to unveil their arts mural at 4.00pm next to the Quill Street Entrance. The beautiful mural was created as part of the project with artist Sophie Rigg.
Following this the Ecology Centre will be running family activities until 5.00pm.
Celebrations for the Connect 2 scheme in Westminster
The next Portrait Bench in London to be unveiled will be in Westminster. This is taking place 4th May 12.00pm at the bottom of St Mary’s Terrace where the new Corten Steel silhouettes of Michael Bond, Alan Turing and Mary Seacole will reside alongside one another.
Doctor Bikes will also be on hand to fix your broken wheels; Westminster’s new home made smoothie makers will be tried and tested. Alongside music, the ‘Crossing Borders Writing Competition’ will be exhibited and there will be a stroll of the scheme to Paddington Basin. This will finish in time for you to meander to the Canalway Cavalcade’s Pageant which is due to start at 2.00pm
Cleaner Air Champions – Hackney, Redbridge and Havering – April
Cleaner Air Champions is an exciting new project being run by Sustrans to reduce local air pollution and improve the areas we live in. As well as governments taking action, there are lots of things we can do to reduce pollution and protect our health. Sustrans are looking for enthusiastic volunteers and volunteer groups to get involved and act as Cleaner Air Champions in Hackney, Havering and Redbridge. Cleaner Air Champions will raise awareness and will help people to take action in their communities to reduce emissions and protect their own health. The project is being delivered by the GLA in partnership with Sustrans and is funded by the Mayor of London.
St Mary’s Portrait Bench Westminster – March
The selection has now been made for the St Mary’s Terrace, Paddington portrait bench figures. Three famous people with links to the area will be immortalised on a portrait bench at St Mary’s Terrace as part of our Connect2 walking and cycling link project in Westminster. We had an overwhelming response over a short period. St Marys and St Saviours churches and the local library kindly hosted voting boxes where people gave us their votes while others voted online. Pupils at Paddington Green Primary School also took part in a vote in their morning assembly and students at The City of Westminster College held their own vote. The chosen characters will soon be revealed and we will hold an unveiling of the bench and opening celebration for the new link in May.
Connect London – January 2018
Our new campaign, Connect London calls on the Mayor to build over 600 miles of safe, quiet cycling routes across the capital at a cost of just £10million a year.
London is experiencing a cycling boom, with more people on their bikes than ever before. But while the number of people cycling continues to increase, many people still feel too unsafe to travel by bike.
We know there is huge potential to increase cycling levels but evidence shows that to help more people feel safe on two wheels we need to provide more continuous, safe routes.
If you look at other cycling cities around the world, London has some catching up to do. But we don’t want London to follow the leader – we’re asking London to be the leader. We want London to have the biggest cycling network in the world – a network like no other city has seen before.
